Tucked away in a quiet coastal pocket of Watermans Bay is a wellness space that feels a little like a secret.
Part sauna, part ice therapy, part mental reset – KURE is a calm, private retreat designed for people who need an hour to switch off, slow down and breathe.
From personal recovery to community space
KURE was born after owner Lou’s husband underwent spinal surgery several years ago. Recovery was challenging, not just physically, but mentally for the whole family. Life suddenly had to slow down and adapt.
Sauna and ice therapy became part of their recovery routine, starting in the most low-tech way possible – buying bags of ice from the local servo and filling up the bathtub.
What they discovered quickly was that the benefits weren’t just physical. The ritual of hot and cold therapy created a mental reset became a way to regulate stress, calm the nervous system and step away from the constant pressure of everyday life.
At the same time, Lou was already running a mental health business from home – Be Seen, Heard, Understood, supporting people who looked like they were coping on the outside but were quietly overwhelmed or burnt out.
The connection between the two worlds felt obvious.
With an unused pocket of space in their garden and a shared belief in the power of this type of reset, the idea for KURE was born. And what started as something for themselves quickly became something they wanted to share with the community.
KURE is a sanctuary with ‘down-south’ vibes, nestled in Waterman’s Bay
A hidden coastal corner to reset
The vibe at KURE is intentionally low-key. Think: down-south coastal energy without the long drive. There’s native plants, chill-out music, a hot-and-cold outdoor shower and a private space designed to help people slow down.
There are no crowds, no pressure and no wellness clichés.
Some people come to start their week with a reset. Others drop in after a tough week at work. Some arrive straight from the gym with sore muscles. Others book in for a date night or a catch-up with a friend.
All of it fits.
KURE was designed especially for people whose minds don’t switch off easily – the overthinkers, the burnt-out, the people carrying more than they show.
It’s a space where your nervous system can step out of “fight or flight” mode for a while.
What to expect during a KURE session
The experience at KURE is intentionally relaxed and flexible. There’s no strict routine and no “right way” to do it.
First-time visitors receive a simple walkthrough before being left to enjoy the space privately. From there, guests move between the sauna, ice bath, shower and relaxation areas at their own pace.
The goal isn’t to push through discomfort or prove anything. Even a short sauna session followed by a quick cold dip can have a powerful effect on the body and mind.
Many people arrive feeling overstimulated or exhausted – and leave calmer, clearer and more energised. Lou is always nearby if guidance is needed, but the space is designed to feel personal and unpressured.
And while the setting is peaceful, it’s also refreshingly real.
Because KURE is run from the family home, you might occasionally hear the soundtrack of everyday life – kids, laughter or a proud six-year-old stopping by to introduce you to the family cat. For most visitors, that’s exactly what makes it special.
A wellness experience that feels human
One of the things people notice most about KURE is how thoughtful the details are.
Lou describes herself as a deeply sensory person, which means everything from lighting and sound to towels, seating and timers has been carefully considered.
If you need something – it’s there.
The aim isn’t perfection or performance. It’s comfort. And that attention to detail helps create an environment where people feel safe enough to truly relax.
At its heart, KURE isn’t about chasing wellness trends or escaping life forever. It’s about creating a small window of time where people can tune out, reset and return to their lives feeling a little more like themselves again.
And perhaps that’s why the space resonates so strongly with locals.
It wasn’t built by a corporate brand or glossy wellness concept.
It was built by real people, for real people – right here on the coast.
